Virtual Wellness Room Initiative for Reducing Mental and Emotional Stressors in Challenging Times
The concept and primary goal of the Wellness Room are thoughtfully designed providing an inviting comforting space for relaxation/meditation and personal reflection and learning. Focusing on the appealing aspects of oneself which can support overall health and well-being. Ultimately reducing stress and anxiety and increasing awareness of the mind-body and spirit connections.
A space where an individual open and receptive has the opportunity to enter The Wellness Room and experience a personal transformation i.e.., release of stress/tension and increased expanded self-awareness. Ultimate leaving the Wellness Room feeling better, than the way entered, with inspiring reinforcements/ takeaways.
The Virtual Wellness Room and concept grew out of a Wellness Room Initiative with the DC Department of Behavioral Health and Adult Services. The program was custom built to offer nontraditional activities for substance abuse education, prevention, and treatment. In addition to providing specific coping skills/ practices, as well as other wellness tool resources to help prevent relapse, reduce withdrawal symptoms, and drug cravings, and provide a healthy outlet for coping with daily stressors.
Identifying a place for clients to go for these services was determined using certain criteria to ensure adequate space for privacy accommodating more than one person at a time was available. Providing a calming environment with comfortable furnishings, sound therapy instruments, positive messages, and affirmations to create a nurturing and calming experience. An opportunity to de-stress, relax, recover, and expand in self-awareness.
The Wellness Room was originally created for clients to have a sensory inhouse experience, due to COVID 19 restrictions made this impossible.
As a result, the Wellness Room design was transfigured to a virtual room format and experience requiring a different approach and process. Not intended to replace a personal visit but to ensure the main purpose held true. Still using visual and sensory simulation and insights focusing on a healthy outlet for reducing stress; promoting self-awareness, relaxation techniques. A long with understanding the role of the mind-body connection and how it is impacted by daily stressors.
Wellness tool and other motivational messages and resources, a sensory experience can be realized along with an interpersonal connection.
